          Ken Hughes

Picture
Ken Hughes was a baptised member of Darkhouse Baptist Church for 72 years; he served as Deacon, Church Secretary, Registrar and Chairman of the R & D Committee. Ken was the founding Captain of 11th Wolverhampton Boys’ Brigade and was also Vice-President of 1st Coseley Girls’ Brigade. As Chairman of the Drama Group he helped to produce many wonderful pantomimes. Ken was a very kind friend to all. His service to God and the Church was outstanding. He will be sadly missed by so many. RIP

NOTE OF THANKS
The family of Ken Hughes would like to thank everyone for their prayers, messages and cards, sent at a very sad time in their lives.
For those who weren't able to join us for the service at Darkhouse, we know your thoughts were with us at the moving service, so
wonderfully lead by Roger Turley.
Special thanks also go to the team responsible for the flowers and excellent buffet, not forgetting Simon and Olive for their part in the
service. Couldn't have done it without your help.
To all who have made donations, these are going to Compton Hospice, a place very special to dad. As long as memory lasts, those
we love never die, for as long as we live and remember, they are with us.
God bless you all. X

Norman Howell
15th October 1941 - 7th March 2014

Picture
As former Captain of 11th Wolverhampton Boys’ Brigade, Norman guided many boys through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and helped give them a grounding for life.
At Darkhouse, Norman was a Deacon, Treasurer, on the Finance Committee, the Fabrics Committee, recorded Minutes at Church Meetings and did a multitude of jobs around the Church, from painting walls, tiling floors and checking the heating boiler to clearing the churchyard (particularly sourcing a company to destroy Japanese Knotweed) and rebuilding the wall. Norman could always be relied upon to tackle any of the jobs that needed to be done.
A quiet, unassuming, gentle man, Norman loved football – supported Walsall – and enjoyed a good conversation.
Norman was ‘one of a kind’. If he could help anyone, in any situation, he would.
Norman Howell, so sadly missed by all at Darkhouse. RIP

Norman Howell
15/10/1941 - 7/3/2014

Norman was a Special Man
Always doing what he can
It was no matter what the need
Norman always took the lead

A serving Deacon and Church Treasurer
Every task to Norman was a pleasure
In serving his Saviour with his usual zest
He never failed to give of his best

He had a warmth of welcome to everyone he met
To meet and know Norman is not easy to forget
Time has passed and Norman has gone
But will always be remembered as our 'Special One'
Dr H Wilkes

Forever remembered. RIP

…     A Tribute to a Gentleman    …

We give glory to God and say “thank you” for the privilege of a sincere friendship with our fellow Deacon, Mr Norman Howell.
We have been together for many years, we have shared so much laughter, shed many tears, we have known the depths of despair and the heights of joy and gladness.  He has shown so much concern for us individually, he always encouraged us, always on hand to help us, nothing was too much trouble for him, and he held us together with his Wellguidance and caring.
He held his position of Church Treasurer with great excellence and he encouraged us always to stand firm for God and Church and share in prayers, Holy Communion and the scriptures.
We will always treasure the friendship we shared with Norman, our friend.  May he now rest in peace with his Lord.
                                                                                                    From his fellow Deacons
                                                                                        +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NOTE OF THANKS
We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to you all for the caring thoughts, flowers and prayers, with the sad loss of Norman.  We are most grateful for all your kind donations which were for Darkhouse and the Critical Care Unit, Russells Hall Hospital, we are sure these will be put to great use. We would like to say a very big “thank you” to all who attended Norman’s Thanksgiving Service, many people having travelled quite a distance just to be there, which is appreciated by all the family.  We would also like to sincerely thank Pastor David Umbers, Kieron and Roger for their kind and wonderful thoughts and memories, which they shared with us.  To everyone who had any dealings with Norman’s Thanksgiving Service, many, many thanks.  It was so gratifying to us, for people to say it was a fitting tribute for a wonderful man who did so much work that most people didn’t know about
May the Lord be with us and guide us forward.
God Bless.
From the family of the late NORMAN HOWELL

Mrs Sheila Russell
 Captain - 1st Coseley Company G.B.
How does one write about the loss of a person whom we have known for many years, one who has served with us in so may ways?
My memories of Sheila go back a long way. She attended our Church, Darkhouse Baptist, all her life. When she was a scholar in the Sunday School, our Girls' Brigade Company was formed in 1952. She joined the Company. She was only the third Captain in the 50 years since the Company was officially founded.
This was not her only work in the Church, however, for she was a loyal Sunday School Teacher, a Church Member and also a very dedicated Officer. She certainly had what one would call 'stickability', for she took very seriously the Officers' pledge.
As in most companies, the numbers have fluctuated but the Officers, led by Sheila, have remained loyal and true to their calling. Under her leadership, the Company has had wonderful times at Camp, have attended Civic Occasions representing not only the Company and the Girls' Brigade but also the Church.
As most of you know, over the years, Officers come and go but Sheila has been quietly carrying out her duties as Captain, confidante and friend, and example. Her work in Girls' Brigade wasn't only in our Company and Church, she was also active in the wider work of Girls' Brigade, attending Regional, Divisional, District and Area Meetings - in fact, she held the position of District Treasurer and served on the Divisional Executive Committee during the early 1980's.
What more can I say? There are so many fields in which Sheila was active. Before I close, I feel I must pay tribute to her husband, Arnold, who was always there to drive the car, to examine and support Sheila and the Company.
So, what can I add? 1st Coseley Company have lost their Captain and guide, our Church has lost a loyal member, the wider fellowship of Girls' Brigade a friend and helper.
I think the words of the old Girls' Life Brigade promise, altered slightly, say it all:-
Be loyal to your Company and Church;
Be kind, cheerful and considerate.
The words, I feel, say everything about Sheila.
So, we say "Goodbye" to our dear beloved friend, giving thanks for her life and witness.
Miss Irene Turley
Former Captain - 1st Coseley Company of the Girls' Brigade
